Supporting children
beyond behavior
By understanding how they experience
the world
If your child is struggling with attention, big emotions, behavior, or daily routines
There’s usually more going on underneath.
Hola, I’m Ale, a bilingual occupational therapist in El Paso, Texas.I support children from toddlerhood through young adulthood using a developmental and relationship-based approach.Instead of focusing only on behaviors, I look at why your child may be struggling with regulation, sensory processing, communication, or developmentMy services vary in degree of intensity and may complement your child’s current therapies to offer a different way of supporting your child.
Services are provided at
we rock the spectrum
home, school, and community
to support your child in real-life environments.

R. Alejandra Perez,
MOT, OTR/L
Specialized pediatric occupational therapist
This approach is especially helpful for children who experience things differentlywhether that shows up as big emotions, difficulty focusing, sensory sensitivities,
picky eating, or differences in development.

About me
What looks like behavior
is often a
nervous system
that feels overwhelmed by
the demands of their environment & their developmental/learning differences.

Alejandra Perez, MOT, OTR/LI support children across the environments that matter most (home, school, and community).
I created Beautiful Occupational Therapy after seeing how many children were expected to meet demands their nervous systems weren't ready for and how often their struggles were misread as behavior problems. After years of using behavior-focused strategies, I kept seeing the same pattern: some kids improved on the surface, but the underlying struggles were coming back in new ways.
By using a developmental & relationship-based approach
I was able to connect with kids that were struggling to connect with the demands of every day.
Only then, kids felt secure and intrinsically motivated enough to explore, communicate, and learn.

Through my work, I realized that supporting children isn’t just about teaching skills or increasing independence. It’s about understanding who they are, how they experience the world, and what they need to feel safe enough to grow.My goal is to support each child and family at their own pace.
Does any of this feel like your child?
😰 Meltdowns & Big Emotions
They go from calm to overwhelm in seconds. Transitions feel hard. Reactions feel big. They are anxious, angry, controlling, too playful.
🍽️ Picky Eating & Mealtime Battles
Limited foods, gagging at textures, distress at mealtime.
You tried it all and you feel stuck.
📚 Can't Sit Still or Focus
Constantly moving, can't stay seated, struggles with attention. Teachers are calling. School work is hard.
👥 Struggles with play
Making or keeping friends feels hard. They don't know how to join play. They're prone to accidents or maybe they are afraid to try new things.
✏️ Falling Behind in development
Most activities are a struggle. Maybe they know how to do it but something just isn't clicking. Things are just too hard for them.
🔊Sensory Differences
Certain sounds, fabrics, lights, or crowds send them over the edge. Getting dressed is a fight. They put everything on their mouth. They seek constant movement or avoid all touch. Maybe they are too slow or too fast.
If you answered yes to even one of these.
I am here for you.

😰 Crisis emocionales y emociones intensas

Reflection Questions
Before we begin our sessions, I would like for you to answer these questions. This simply helps guide our work together in a way that feels supportive and realistic for you.💛 1. Current experience
What feels most challenging for you right now when supporting your child?🌿 2. How much time (hours a week) and energy do you realistically have right now to learn and implement new strategies at home?🤍 3. What kind of support feels most helpful to you right now?
(For example: guidance and understanding in sessions or resources to review outside sessions, less/more hands-on support, practical tools, traditional therapy model). There are no right or wrong answers. This simply helps guide our work together in a way that feels supportive and realistic for you.
As we move forward, I will offer different options based on what feels most supportive for you and your child. You can always request more guidance, more or less hands-on support, or adjust where sessions take place (home, school, or other settings). These sessions are not just guided by me—they are yours and your child’s. We shape them together.
YOUR BINDER
🌻 During your first session, you will receive a binder that we will use throughout our work together. This binder is meant to support you in understanding your child on a deeper level (not just what is happening, but why).✨ Purpose of the binderThe binder is a space for you to reflect, take notes, and make sense of what we are learning together. It helps us track patterns, notice progress, and build a clearer understanding of your child’s strengths, needs, and development over time.🧠 How we use it
We will use this binder as we need to throughout sessions and at home.It includes:
1- space to write important insights, reminders, write down questions, and observations during sessions2- A page designed to add your child’s sensory needs3- Guidance on how your child processes and expresses information4- An introduction to nervous system states (regulation, overwhelm, shutdown)5- A developmental table that will serve as guide and to help us track growth at home and during sessions.6- A section with multiple self-reflection questionsThis is something we build together over time. It’s a tool to help you feel supported as you move through this process with your child.
ONE LAST THING
🌻 My approach goes beyond behavior and focuses on understanding how your child experiences the world. I meet your child where they are developmentally, instead of expecting them to do things they’re not ready for yet. Rather than “doing therapy to them,” we create the right conditions—through connection, regulation, and play—so that development can begin to grow naturally. From there, we build on their strengths and interests to support progress in a way that feels meaningful and lasting.
Reviews
BeAutiful Occupational Therapy is currently a growing practice, and many families are still actively participating in services."We have been working with Ale for DIR FloorTime for several months, and I have been so impressed with her kindness and patience with my son, her flexibility with our schedule, and her professionalism with providing us detailed evaluation and session notes, prompt billing, and resources about FloorTime. We attended sessions in the front room of her home, which is lovingly converted into a therapy space with age-appropriate toys designed to help follow the child’s lead. I’m so thankful for Ale! She is a gifted therapist who understands children and how to read their cues and meet them where they are.
She has been a blessing to our family."If you are a current or past BeAutiful Occupational Therapy family and would like to share your experience, I would truly appreciate your feedback.

Frequently Asked questions
What makes BeAutiful Occupational Therapy different from traditional therapy approaches?BeAutiful Occupational Therapy takes a developmental, relationship-based, and nervous system-informed approach to supporting children and families. We provide OT traditional therapy as well as supplemental therapeutic tools to support you and your child. Instead of focusing only on surface behaviors or isolated skills, therapy looks at the underlying developmental foundations that support regulation, communication, learning, participation, and daily life.
Sessions are individualized, child-centered, and designed to support long-term growth and connection.
Once you graduate from our services you will leave our services with a list of individualized resources and information to continue your journey. What ages and children do you work with?Services are designed for children and young adults with a wide range of developmental, sensory, emotional, learning, feeding, communication, and regulation differences. This may include children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, executive functioning challenges, selective eating, emotional regulation difficulties, social-emotional developmental differences, or children who may simply need additional support participating successfully at home, school, or in the community. What does a therapy session look like?Sessions are play-based, child-led, movement-based, and highly interactive with clear therapeutic goals and supportive boundaries. Being child-led with purpose means we follow the child’s interests, emotions, and developmental readiness to build regulation, communication, confidence, problem-solving, and meaningful participation. Instead of focusing only on following instructions, this approach helps children develop the underlying skills needed to think, learn, connect, communicate, and succeed across everyday environments.Do you offer DIRFloortime® therapy?Yes. BeAutiful Occupational Therapy integrates DIRFloortime® principles and developmental, relationship-based intervention approaches into sessions when appropriate for the child and family. Therapy focuses on building connection, communication, emotional regulation, flexibility, symbolic thinking, and developmental capacities through meaningful interactions and play.Where are services provided?Services may be offered in-home, in community settings, select private school settings, at We Rock the Spectrum, or through telehealth depending on availability, scheduling, and the child’s individual needs. A collaborative approach across environments is encouraged whenever possible.Do you accept insurance?Insurance credentialing is currently in progress. At this time, services are primarily private pay, though additional funding options may become available in the future (TEFA). Families are welcome to reach out directly to learn more about current availability, waiting lists, rates, evaluations, and payment options. How do I know if this approach is the right fit for my child? This approach may be a good fit for families looking for support that goes beyond behavior management alone and instead focuses on understanding the child’s developmental profile, nervous system, emotional experience, sensory processing, and overall participation in daily life. The goal is to support children in feeling safer, more connected, more flexible, and more capable across environments and relationships.
Resources
Dan SieguelA lot of what I’ve learned from the work of Daniel Siegel is the importance of helping children use their “whole brain”:
Helping them connect emotions, experiences, body sensations, relationships, and logical thinking together in a way that helps life make sense.Instead of focusing only on changing behaviors, I value helping children reflect, process experiences, understand emotions, and make connections between what they feel, what happened, and why.Over time, this helps children build internal abilities like empathy, emotional awareness, flexible thinking, problem solving, and moral understanding, Not just compliance/obedience when an adult is present. One of the reasons this approach is considered developmental is because we support children based on their current level of understanding and capacity.
A two-year-old will understand and process the world very differently than an older child, so our expectations, guidance, and support should reflect that. This does not mean there are no boundaries, structure, or rules. It means we present and shape those experiences in ways that are meaningful and developmentally appropriate for the child.Rather than trying to control every behavior, the goal is to guide, support, co-regulate, and help children gradually develop the ability to understand themselves, others, relationships, and the world around them in deeper and more connected ways.

Affect AutismThe Affect Autism podcast and support group community can be a wonderful resource for parents who are interested in learning more about developmental, relationship-based, and neurodiversity-affirming approaches.
Many of their resources are free, and they also offer affordable parent support groups and mentorship-style communities for families who want ongoing guidance, support, and connection with others learning through a similar lens.I often recommend these types of resources for parents of Autistic children who want to continue exploring these ideas outside of therapy sessions and better understand their child, themselves, and the parent-child relationship in a deeper and more connected way.
Robyn Gobbel
When I talk about being trauma-informed therapy, I’m not only referring to major traumatic events.Sometimes it can simply mean understanding that some children have more sensitive nervous systems or stronger stress responses to experiences, environments, transitions, emotions, sensory input, or relationships. In other words, two children may experience the same situation very differently. One child may move through it easily, while another child’s body and nervous system may experience it as overwhelming, stressful, or dysregulating.A trauma-informed approach helps us respond with more curiosity, support, connection, and understanding instead of assuming a child is simply being “difficult” or intentionally misbehaving. It reminds us that children’s behaviors are often connected to how safe, regulated, understood, and supported they feel in that momentA lot of my understanding of trauma-informed care has also been influenced by the work of Robin Gobbel. One of the things I appreciate most about her work is how she helps parents understand that children’s behaviors are often deeply connected to stress, overwhelm, relationships, sensory experiences, regulation, life experiences, and feelings of safety — not simply “bad behavior” or intentional defiance. To me, being trauma-informed does not mean assuming something is “wrong” with a child or seeing every behavior as trauma. It means understanding that experiences, stress, relationships, sensory processing, emotional overwhelm, medical experiences, environment, and repeated moments of disconnection can all shape how a child experiences the world, their body, relationships, and learning.A trauma-informed approach focuses less on “What’s wrong with this child?” and more on “What might this child be experiencing?” or “What is making this hard right now?” It recognizes that behavior is often connected to feelings of safety, connection, regulation, understanding, and developmental capacity. This also means being mindful of how we respond to children. Instead of relying heavily on fear, shame, punishment, or control, we aim to create supportive relationships, emotional safety, predictable environments, co-regulation, and developmentally appropriate guidance that helps children build skills over time.Being trauma-informed does not mean having no boundaries, rules, or structure. Children still need limits, routines, support, and guidance. The difference is that we try to understand the child’s internal experience while supporting growth in a way that protects connection, dignity, and long-term emotional development.
